Address Verification System

The Address Verification System (AVS) is an added security feature that electronically compares a customer's credit card billing address that is in the database of the issuing bank, to the address that they customer supplies when they make a purchase.

It is a common misconception that only Internet merchants need to use AVS. In fact, all card not present merchants must utilize the AVS system in order to receive a qualified discount rate for VISA transactions. The Address Verification System is used to protect merchants and consumers from credit card fraud. The AVS system should be used by merchants whenever possible.
