Benefits of Credit Card Acceptance
As business owners, we love to use credit cards but we hate to accept them. The truth of the matter is that almost all businesses must accept credit cards in order to stay competitive in today's marketplace. Aggressive marketing from issuing banks, various rewards programs, and the general spending habits of consumers have made credit cards more popular than cash as a form of payment for today's average consumer.
Once you are able to look past the cost of accepting credit cards there are some very real benefits in accepting them.
Higher Average Tickets
There are numerous studies available from credit card companies and independent organizations that prove the average credit card sale is higher than the average cash or check sale. Consumers today are impatient and are not willing to wait until they have the cash on hand to get what they want, and with credit cards they don't have to. Almost everyone can recall a situation where they really wanted to make a purchase but were short on cash. Instead of waiting until the cash was available they pulled out their trusty plastic and made the purchase.
Higher Total Sales
Similar to consumers not wanting to wait to make a single large purchase as described in the paragraph above, consumers will spend more when they pay with a credit card. Regardless of how dangerous this mindset is to a person's finances, many people don't feel as though they're actually paying for something when they use their credit card. They are not forking over cash, and they have as long as they'd like to pay the final balance. This makes them feel relaxed and at ease about spending more. If the total purchase is more than the cash they have available, they will proceed with the transaction anyway, feeling comfortable that they can pay for it gradually at a later date.
Credit Card Rewards & Incentives
With the onslaught of rewards programs being offered by credit card issuers consumers are looking to use their credit card whenever possible in order to accumulate rewards points. Whether it's a new car, airline miles, or cash back consumers are determined to make their credit card purchases count for something. This trend is especially noticeable in the business to business markets where companies that are able to accept credit cards are seeing a spike in business, and companies that are not able to accept credit cards are seeing a decline.
The reason for this can be found in the aggressive marketing and rewards programs being pushed by issuing banks. Consumers looking to increase their rewards points will always choose to make a purchase with a business that is able to accept credit cards versus a business that cannot. If your business does not accept credit cards, and your competition does, you are putting yourself at a large competitive disadvantage. The growing trend with rewards cards is only going to get stronger in the years to come.
